GIP Event: AFS Panel Discussion

This past Sunday, the Liu's hosted a panel discussion and luncheon with current and future Global Scholars and AFS students currently living in Los Angeles. There were two students from Italy, including Luca from Poly, one from Jordan, and one from Tunisia.

Throughout the whole event, I was struck by the fact that while the facts about our lives were very different, the students themselves were very similar to me and other American teenagers. Prompted by Rory and me, they discussed everything from weird foods they've tried here to the way their schools work back home.

One of the most interesting conversations I had was with the two boys from Tunisia and Jordan. I have been taking an Arabic class for a year now, and we talked in depth about dialect. Arabic has a standardized version called MSA ("Modern Standard Arabic"), but most people speak in the dialect associated with their geographic location. It was interesting to talk to two Arabic speakers who speak different dialects and have them talk about the way they communicate with each other, more specifically, when they use MSA vs. their dialect.

Thank you to the Liu's for hosting and Ms. McConnell and Ms. Denham for organizing this event!
